 今日2月2日はGroundhog Dayです。日本では2月3日ですが、こちらはまだ2日。
Groundhogという動物が冬眠から目を覚まし、穴の外に出て、自分の影が見えれば、春はまだ遠く、影が見えなければ、春は近い。アメリカにはそういう言い伝えがあります。

我が家のある南カリフォルニアは晴れていたので、きっと影が見えたに違いありません。
うちの小学校3年の娘が、朝起きて、「影が見えただろうね〜」と言う。春は遠いか。

グラウンドホッグ・デーの本拠地というか、メッカというか、本家はペンシルバニア州であるらしい。かの地では影が見えず、春は近いとABCニュースで報道されていました。

Groundhog Day brings prediction

of early US spring

The world's most famous groundhog emerged from his burrow early on Friday

(local time) to predict an early spring in the United States for the first time

in eight years.

On the 121st annual Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow,

which according to the folklore of German settlers in central Pennsylvania means

spring is just around the corner.

The groundhog seeing his shadow would have signalled six more weeks of winter.

(グラウンドホッグが自分の影を見たならば、冬はもう6週間続くということ)

'The prognosticator of prognosticators has spoken! Phil says we'll have an

early spring,' the Pennsylvania tourism office said in a statement.

But according to more conventional weather forecasters, spring is not coming

too soon.

Pennsylvania temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing

during the coming week.

(ペンシルベニア州では来週も零度以下の日が続くようだ。)

Since 1887, the groundhog has not seen his shadow only 14 times. Phil has

been 100 per cent accurate in his predictions, according to the official

groundhog day website.

(1887年以来、グラウンドホッグに自分の影が見えなかったのはわずか14回だけ。有名グラウンドホッグのフィル君の予報は100%正確だと、グラウンドホッグ・デー公式ウェブサイトには書かれている。)

In Canada, albino groundhog Wiarton Willie, based in South Bruce Peninsula,

Ontario, also predicted an early end to winter.

（カナダでも、オンタリオ州サウス・ブルース半島に住む白いグラウンドホッグのウィアートン・ウィリー君がやはり冬は早く終わると予報を出した。）

It is the first forecast from this particular Wiarton Willie, who is only 10 months

old and who took on the job after the previous Wiarton Willie died last summer.
